EAST BAY CHAPTER ALA CONNECTION February 2026
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Chapter Members and Business Partners,
We hope you enjoyed Morning in the East Bay and that Chad Greeson and Richard Gillespie’s 2026 Labor Law Update gave you valuable insights without keeping you up at night.
We were also especially excited to welcome Michael Cohen from Duane Morris, who presented Become a Destination Law Firm Employer: Status Quo Is Falling Behind. He is always such an engaging speaker, and we were extremely lucky to have him present for us.
We thank Joy Buchanan and all the volunteers who helped with organizing Morning in the East Bay!
We are also grateful that ALA President-Elect Elyssa Goldstein was able to travel across the country to not only attend Morning in the East Bay, but also to meet with our Board members for a mini-Board retreat as we begin preparing for the 2026–2027 Board year.
We can’t wait to see Elyssa take the gavel at the ALA Annual Conference in National Harbor, Maryland this April. If you’re able, there is still time to register!
Truly yours,
Helen Miranda, SHRM-CP
East Bay Chapter President

The Correspondent
By Virginia Evans
“Imagine, the letters one has sent out into the world, the letters received back in turn, are like the pieces of a magnificent puzzle … Isn’t there something wonderful in that, to think that a story of one’s life is preserved in some way, that this very letter may one day mean something, even if it is a very small thing, to someone?”
Filled with knowledge that only comes from a life fully lived, The Correspondent is a gem of a novel about the power of finding solace in literature and connection with people we might never meet in person. It is about the hubris of youth and the wisdom of old age, and the mistakes and acts of kindness that occur during a lifetime.
Sybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings, around half past ten, Sybil sits down to write letters -- to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter.
Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has -- a mother, grandmother, wife, divorcee, distinguished lawyer, she has lived a very full life. But when letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life, she realizes that the letter she has been writing over the years needs to be read and that she cannot move forward until she finds it in her heart to offer forgiveness.
Sybil Van Antwerp’s life of letters might be “a very small thing,” but she also might be one of the most memorable characters you will ever read.

CERTIFIED LEGAL MANAGER (CLM)
ALA CLM Exam - Application Deadline

As the legal services industry becomes more diverse and competitive, the need for capable managers has never been greater. That’s why earning the Certified Legal Manager (CLM)® credential — regardless of the stage in your career — shows your commitment to staying on top of the legal management profession.
It’s not an easy credential to earn — but that’s the point. The CLM credential demonstrates to your firm that you’ve mastered the knowledge, skills and abilities to operate at a high level of expertise in the field of legal management. In fact, those who pass the CLM exam have the depth and breadth of knowledge and management skills that enables them to visit any 30- to 50-attorney law office, review practices and procedures, and be conversant about — and offer advice in — each of the areas listed in the Body of Knowledge.
ALA is the exclusive credentialing body of the CLM program, and CLM Certification is offered twice a year — in the Spring and the Fall. (See below for important 2025 and 2026 dates.)
Spring 2026
Application deadline: April 3
Test dates: May 4-29
Fall 2026
Application deadline: September 4
Test dates: November 2-25
